The ABC Youth Foundation has expanded its focus and become a complete After School Program. The new model balances the prior emphasis on boxing, self defense and self esteem, with a strong educational component. Unique to the vision, the facility houses a library/learning center within the boxing gym. As part of our commitment to local students, we have established a formal partnership with Golden Hill K-8 School and King-Chavez Preparatory Academy and are offering free after school tutoring.
We have two credentialed teachers and a math and science tutor working with the students for two hours every day. Volunteers from local universities (UCSD and Pt. Loma Nazarene) will also be involved as our needs expand. Our library is starting to fill with books that are appealing, relevant and accessible to our students, who are encouraged to use them on site or bring them home to read.
Our learning center provides students with a quiet, comfortable space where they can study. There are 20 new laptops available and the students use them as tools for homework and research in the learning center. The goal of the educational program is to enable the ABC youth to succeed academically and ultimately obtain college degrees.
